Eight schools remain active shelters, housing residents displaced by Hurricane Melissa 5 months ago.
Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry Dr. Kasan Troupe says there are 93 shelterees in the educational institutions, a significant reduction in relation to earlier numbers.
The Jamaica Teachers Association has raised concerns about persons being accommodated on school property despite the resumption of classes.
It has called on the Government to resolve the matter.
Noting that Jamaica has faced a difficult time with the passage of the hurricane, Dr. Troupe says the Ministry is supporting the recovery process.
She adds that the Ministry has been working with shelterees, even as efforts continue to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
The Permanent Secretary points out that those being accommodated are known to the school community and some are relatives of staff and students.
Dr. Troupe further explains that many of those being housed also supported the schools’ clean up efforts. after the hurricane.
