Mason Greenwood has formally requested to switch international allegiance to Jamaica, his mother’s country of origin. The English forward, who made his only appearance for the Three Lions in 2020, has not featured in the national team setup since.

With Thomas Tuchel preparing to name his first England squad next Friday, English Football Association (FA) chief executive Mark Bullingham was asked whether Greenwood, currently playing for Marseille, could be considered.

“So my understanding is he’s asked to switch. That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to [play for England] because you can only switch once,” Bullingham said.

If approved, the 22-year-old Greenwood would link up with Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren, the former Manchester United assistant manager.

A product of Manchester United’s academy, Greenwood was once seen as a long-term prospect for the club, scoring 35 goals in 129 appearances before his career stalled.

His absence from England’s major tournament squads and off-field controversies have fueled speculation over his international future.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault, later facing charges of attempted rape, coercive behaviour, and assault. The charges were dropped in 2023.

Since moving to Marseille, he has regained form, scoring 16 goals in 26 games. His performances have sparked discussions about an England return, but he was overlooked by interim manager Lee Carsley and former boss Gareth Southgate ahead of Euro 2024.
