The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has maintained a flash flood warning for five eastern parishes, while extending a flash flood watch for three central parishes amid continued heavy rainfall.

A flash flood warning means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly, and a flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible.

The warning remains in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew.

Meanwhile, the flash flood watch remains in place for St. Ann, St. Catherine and Clarendon until 5 this afternoon.

The Met Service says a broad trough extending across the central Caribbean has been generating unstable weather conditions across the island since Friday.

It says moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting several parishes, particularly eastern and central sections of the island.

The agency says it is forecasting intermittent showers and thunderstorms through this evening, which could trigger flash flooding.

It is also warning of possible landslides, particularly across eastern parishes due to increased soil saturation.

Motorists and pedestrians are being urged not to attempt to cross flooded roadways, while residents in low-lying areas are advised to remain alert and be prepared to move to higher ground.

Fishers and other marine interests, particularly along the south coast, are being advised to exercise caution as sea conditions continue to deteriorate.
