Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, has revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the two individuals found dead in the wheel well of a JetBlue aircraft at a Florida airport are not Jamaicans.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Johnson Smith stated that the Government is still awaiting formal reports as investigations continue.

"Further information received now indicates that the individuals are not Jamaican. We still, however, await formal reports as investigations continue," said Johnson Smith.

The update follows earlier speculation on social media that the two men were Jamaicans.

According to US media reports, the bodies were found badly decomposed in the aircraft's landing gear compartment during a post-flight maintenance inspection on Monday night.

The flight, which operated as Flight 1801, departed from John F Kennedy International Airport in New York and arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Further reports suggested that the flight had initially departed from Kingston, Jamaica, which further fuelled speculation that the victims were Jamaicans.

US authorities are still probing the incident.
