Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, more Jamaicans have been packing their bags and catching flights to vacation in various countries that are visa-free to Jamaican passport holders.
Many of these destinations are right in the region, in the Latin American and non-CARICOM Caribbean.
One fast-growing destination is Peru, which is known for its vibrant mix of history, cuisine, and adventure.

Peru is also fast becoming a travel hotspot for Jamaicans.
Onya Tinglin, owner of Saskia Skyers Adventures, a tried-and-tested travel company.
Tinglin says Jamaicans are increasingly eager to explore the South American gem because of its beauty, diversity in food, adventure spots, and overall affordability.
‘The hotel prices, transportation, food and activities are very affordable. Peru also gives Jamaicans the opportunity to explore a destination outside of the Caribbean, because if they go to, for instance, the DR [Dominican Republic], it’s like you’re in Jamaica with the beach and the climate. However, in Peru, the climate and architecture are different and so it gives you the experience of being in a totally different region,’ she explained.

She noted that even though Cusco, another city in Peru, is popular due to its proximity to the world-famous Machu Picchu, the capital, Lima, a coastal city lying along the deep blue hues of the Pacific Ocean, is also a major hotspot for tourists.
Tinglin added that the city provides a dynamic blend of rich history, diverse culture, and gastronomical experiences.
These include exploring the colonial remnants of buildings, to paragliding over the scenic cliffs of Miraflores, and indulging in world-renowned Peruvian cuisine, shopping, and immersing in the Bohemian art scene in Barranco.
‘You can do paratriking or take surf lessons on the beach. If you like restaurants, malls and clubs, Lima is the place,’ Tinglin added.

Tinglin provided some tips for first-time visitors to Peru.
‘Check the weather before you go because it can get really cold. The seasons are different from the Caribbean. So, for instance, when we are going through summer, they are experiencing winter and vice-versa. Make sure that you bring the appropriate clothing and purchase an e-SIM or purchase a SIM card [for ease of connectivity]. I always recommend travel insurance when you're travelling to foreign countries because you never know, you might get sick and anything can happen,’ she advised.
