Prime Minister Andrew Holness
Jamaicans who are in dire need of assistance with repairs to the roofs of their respective homes are expected to soon benefit from assistance from the Government.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Andrew Holness in his Christmas message to the nation.
Holness cited the frequent requests he receives for housing repair assistance, particularly for roofing.
"The heavy rains have wreaked havoc to roofs across the country," Holness declared.
"While we will not be able to assist every private dwelling, we will be examining ways in which we can quickly assist those households most in need of roofing repairs," he stated.
The prime minister underscored the importance of adapting to climate change, stating that, "while we don’t have snow, given the climate change factors, we are certainly going to have more intense weather events."
On that score, he said: "Your Government will design and develop a programme to help you adapt and mitigate the impacts of the changing climate."
The planned initiative will form part of the Government's efforts to improve disaster resilience following the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl on July 3, which resulted in many homes being significantly damaged.
The island also suffered minor damages from the passage of Tropical Storm Rafael in November, while rainfall has been particularly heavy between the months of September and November of this year.
In addition to some households being significantly damaged by rainfall associated with weather events over that period, the island's roads have also been negatively impacted by increasing numbers and sizes of potholes, and also by land slippages.
