British Caribbean Insurance Company (BCIC) and JN General Insurance Company (JNGI) have paid approximately $J22.16 billion to homeowners, businesses and motorists affected by Hurricane Melissa.
The announcement comes as Jamaica approaches the first anniversary of the Category Five storm on October 28.
As at September 30, the two insurers had received a combined total of 3,797 claims, with 3,326 or approximately 88% settled.
BCIC closed 90% of its claims, meeting the Financial Services Commission’s September 30 target while JNGI settled approximately 82%.
However, 471 claims remain open.
The companies say some customers with outstanding claims have already received interim payments totalling approximately $14.85 billion, while final assessments and settlement discussions continue.
Outstanding claims include residential, commercial property and motor claims with some of the more complex commercial cases requiring additional assessments of property damage, equipment, lost income and business expenses.
BCIC Managing Director Peter Levy says the companies remain responsible for customers whose claims have not yet been finalised.
Levy says the insurers are prioritising outstanding assessments and making partial payments where possible to help customers rebuild their homes and businesses.
The companies are targeting a 95% settlement rate by October 28.
