Jamaican students in Cuba are being encouraged to be prepared for possible emergency evacuation if the fuel situation there worsens.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson-Smith said the government is monitoring the situation and is in touch with the affected students.

Speaking at yesterdays post cabinet press briefing Johnson-Smith explained that, for some students, their institutions have temporarily closed down, while for others, their institutions have resorted to a virtual modality.

Johnson-Smith said some students have decided to return home.

The minister said the government has taken steps to support the affected students.

These include, holding discussions with local institutions about allowing the students to continue studies in Jamaica, if the disruption in Cuba persists.

The affected students were encouraged to consult with their parents and Cuban institutions on the options available to them.
