King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie is calling for the review of legislation that are out-dated or in need of amendment.
He was speaking on behalf of the private bar, at this morning’s opening of the hilary term of the Home Circuit Court.
According to Mr. Champagnie, in Belize, the justice board has a commission to regularly review legislation.
He called for the same to be applied in Jamaica.
He called for the review of the Firearms Prohibition and Regulations Act of 2022 which stipulates a minimum 20-year prison sentence for prohibited weapons, with potential for life imprisonment among other things.
He said the act will create further backlog in court cases if it is not reviewed.
