The Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in St Thomas will benefit from a multi-million dollar investment in the upcoming financial year 2025-2026.
Wentworth Charles, board chairman of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA), announced the planned upgrades at the hospital’s 70th-anniversary Thanksgiving Church Service on Sunday, February 23.
The initiative includes major projects such as the construction of a new morgue, an upgrade to dietary services, expansion of existing facilities, installation of a 150,000-gallon water tank and the upgrade of housing accommodations for nurses and senior medical residents.
Recent advancements in medical technology and infrastructure, such as state-of-the-art equipment, including a digital X-ray machine, have strengthened the hospital’s ability to provide quality care, SERHA said in a statement.
Continuous upgrades include a CT scan machine, enhanced ultrasound services, laboratory services, additional hospital beds, surgical equipment, and an upgraded electrical system. Additionally, improved roadways have significantly enhanced access to the hospital.
Charles mentioned that multiple investments have already been made in St Thomas’ health infrastructure, in anticipation of its growth.
“Millions of dollars have been spent in Arcadia, Port Morant and other health centres, giving support to the wider community so that we can take the burden off Princess Margaret Hospital,” the Chairman said.
He also honoured those who contributed to PMH’s success, from visionary leaders to medical professionals including the doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff both past and present.
Founded on February 23, 1955, and named after Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret, PMH has been a cornerstone of health services for St. Thomas, parts of St. Andrew, and Portland. In collaboration with 17 health centres, the hospital provides comprehensive services ranging from General Medicine to specialized Surgical care, adapting to the communities’ evolving needs.
Looking forward, these strategic upgrades are expected to significantly reduce patient wait times, increase the hospital’s capacity to handle complex cases and introduce cutting-edge medical technologies. SERHA is committed to ensuring that PMH not only meets but exceeds future healthcare demands, positioning it as a model of excellence and innovation in the region.
