Man fatally shot on Oxford Road, St Catherine; INDECOM launches probe

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) responded to and is investigating the circumstances of a police fatal shooting incident, resulting in the death of an unidentified man.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 6, along Oxford Road in St Catherine.

INDECOM is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the deceased male.

He was wearing a red shorts and dark multicoloured underpants.

He is of dark complexion, slim build and had a corn-row hairstyle. Any person with information to assist with his identification, as well as information in relation to the fatal shooting is asked to contact INDECOM’s landline at 876-968-8875, INDECOM’s Whatsapp number at (876)553-0000 or visit INDECOM’s office in New Kingston.

The police report, that the now deceased tried to disarm one of the police officers and a struggle ensued, causing minor injury to the officer. It is further reported that another officer, fired at the now deceased man, in response to the struggle unfolding.

No firearm was reported as recovered from the deceased.

The incident scene was examined and the evidential material recovered, processed and packaged.

The hands of the deceased were swabbed for gunshot residue, and his body was photographed and sealed, pending post mortem examination. 

Initial accounts of the incident were provided by the concerned officers and they were served with Section 21 Notices, pursuant to the IndependentCommissionofInvestigationsAct, 2010, to submit statements and attend interviews.

Year to date, sixty-one (61) persons have been shot and killed by the Security Forces, of which five (5) were fatally shot in March.
