Firefighters have managed to contain a fire at the VIP Club Kingston lounge at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) on Friday.

The blaze started from air conditioning (AC) unit inside the lounge, which resulted in passengers and staff being evacuated from the airport.

In a statement on Friday, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Daryl Vaz, said that the fire was contained to the area which it started.

He said there has been no reports of injuries, or major damage to the facility.

"We can say at this point that there is no major damage, and that we expect that in short order, we will be able to restore normality at the airport," the minister said.

"There is an issue of smoke that has penetrated the AC system; so there is smoke in a number of areas in the departure lounge," Vaz informed.

He stated that personnel are currently "venting out" the smoke to facilitate the resumption of normal airport operations.

A British Airways flight coming from London has been affected by the development, according to Vaz.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to land it and turn it around with a slight delay," the minister stated.
