Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gary McKenzie has commended the smooth execution of security operations at the highly anticipated Freedom Street concert, held at the National Stadium on the evening of December 31, 2024.

The event, which began around 6 PM, drew thousands of patrons eager to see Vybz Kartel’s first major performance since his release from prison, along with an impressive lineup of other dancehall stars.

ACP McKenzie stated that the police were tasked with ensuring safety and security for attendees while managing traffic flow in and around the venue. Reflecting on the night, he expressed satisfaction with the overall outcome.

“The show was well-attended, and there were no major incidents reported to us,” he said. “I believe patrons came and enjoyed themselves.”

The police implemented a range of measures to ensure the safety of concertgoers, including monitoring the departure of patrons and managing traffic at park-and-ride areas and surrounding communities. “We are currently ensuring that people get home safely,” McKenzie added, emphasizing the focus on security even after the event concluded.

One notable incident during the night involved dancehall artist Popcaan, who was reportedly involved in a disagreement at the venue. While ACP McKenzie acknowledged the incident, he stated that the police were not privy to the full details. “From time to time, there will be disagreements, especially with artistes,” he said.

He highlighted that such events often attract entourages and followers who seek to gain access to restricted areas, which can lead to confrontations. “There are rules surrounding that, and we have to control shows like this to ensure all security measures are upheld,” McKenzie explained.
