NSWMA says proper disposal, clearing of South Gully in Montego-Bay will reduce flooding
Proper waste disposal by citizens as well as frequent clearing of debris and sediment from the South Gully in Montego-Bay St. James will help reduce instances of flooding during periods of heavy rain.
Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority Audley Gordon made the observation while at the coastal clean up operation yesterday.
He said while clearing the gully does not fall under the NSWMA’s mandate, the initiative was conducted as part of the agency’s debris management project, following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October.
Gordon urged citizens to be better stewards of the environment.
meanwhile, Deputy Mayor of Montego-Bay, Dwight Crawford noted the timely clearing of the gully, especially with the 2026 hurricane season just months away.
