More than US$1 billion will be required to resolve the sewage issues in Downtown Kingston.
Acting President of the National Water Commission (NWC), Kevin Kerr, provided the figure while responding to questions from Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Julian Robinson, yesterday.
Shoppers, vendors and motorists using the Downtown Kingston space have often raised concerns about the overflow of sewage in the space.
Mr. Kerr told the Committee that while that figure will not be realistically forthcoming, the NWC has received a commitment from the Government and the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) to improve infrastructure in priority areas in Downtown Kingston.
He did not name the areas for the proposed works.
However, Mr. Kerr said the works will extend beyond resolving the water and sewage issues, to include drainage works.
