“Remove the tax on water”.

That was a suggestion from Opposition Leader Mark Golding, as a counter proposal to Government’s tax on sugar sweetened beverages.

In his contribution to the budget debate in Parliament today, Mr Golding lamented that water costs more than gas.

He chastised the Government for taxing sweetened drinks, which can only be derived from sales, while claiming that the tax is aimed at reducing sugar consumption.

In the meantime, the opposition leader has stressed that a People’s National Party Government would remove barriers and lower costs, to support MSMES and grow the economy.

He noted that the informal economy is large, due to barriers to formalisation and compliance.

He said a PNP led Government would offer a 3 year tax holiday as part of efforts to build the MSME sector.
