Port Maria Mayor chastises NWA for not adequately maintaining roads and drains

Mayor of Port Maria Fitzroy Wilson has chastised the National Works Agency (NWA) for what he deems the failure to adequately maintain roads and drains in St. Mary, for which it has responsibility.

His comments come after a section of the Huddersfield to Stewart Town main road was flooded due to heavy rainfall yesterday, rendering the thoroughfare impassable.

There are also reports that the homes of some residents were flooded. 

The mayor said on numerous occasions the St Mary Municipal Corporation had to conduct maintenance on infrastructure that fall under the purview of the NWA.

He is calling on the agency to fulfil its mandate and reduce the impact of flooding on residents.

The Mayor added that concerns have been mounting over an unmaintained soak-away in the area, noting that heavy equipment is needed to properly clear it.

The Mayor said assessments are being conducted to determine how best to provide assistance to residents affected by the heavy rainfall over the past few days.

He said contact was made with the relevant authorities to coordinate relief and response.
