Portland health authorities urge stakeholders to remain vigilant in fight against leptospirosis
Health authorities in Portland are urging stakeholders to remain vigilant in the fight against leptospirosis and to intensify efforts to keep the rodent population under control.
The parish’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Sharon Lewis made the statement while disclosing that 4 suspected cases of leptospirosis have been reported since the start of the year.
Dr. Lewis said sustained interventions are needed to prevent a pile up of solid waste at collection sites.
She noted that recent enforcement actions were taken against several food establishments in Portland due to rodent infestations and other breaches of food handling regulations.
Dr. Lewis said the owners of the establishments were provided with guidance on effecting corrective measures before being permitted to re-open to the public.
