The Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ) is calling for a national sports infrastructure and investment strategy.
The aim is for sporting facilities to be treated as productive economic assets capable of generating sustained commercial, tourism and employment opportunities.
The PSOJ says its call comes amid growing investment by Jamaican football clubs to upgrade home grounds to international standards.
The organization notes that it believes these investments point to a wider opportunity for Jamaica.
It says the nation should move beyond a predominantly event-by-event or facility-by-facility approach to a framework that connects sports infrastructure with private investment, tourism, entertainment, skills development and measurable economic returns.
PSOJ’s Sports and Entertainment Development Committee is recommending that the establishment of the national sports infrastructure begin with an independent assessment of priority facilities against relevant international standards.
It says such an exercise should identify infrastructure gaps, capital requirements, workforce needs, potential revenue models and opportunities for private-sector participation.
This its notes would provide the Government, sporting bodies and investors with a common evidence base for determining where investment can generate the greatest sporting and economic returns.
