For a 12th consecutive year the number of people killed on the nation’s roads has surpassed the 300 mark.

Six more road users were killed over the past five days, pushing the number of people killed in traffic crashes this year to 304. The deaths resulted from 261 fatal crashes, according to the latest statistics released on Wednesday by the Road Safety Unit (RSU) within the Island Traffic Authority.

Despite surpassing the 300 mark, the RSU is reporting that fatalities have decreased by 10 per cent, while fatal crashes are down 16 per cent this year, when compared with the similar period in 2023.

The last time road fatalities were below 300 was in 2012 when 260 people perished in traffic crashes.

Meanwhile, the RSU said motorcyclists account for 33 per cent of the road users killed since the start of the year. Pedestrians account for 18 per cent; private motor vehicle drivers account for 17 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers 13 per cent; and passengers of public passenger vehicles for five per cent.

Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion riders) account for 58 per cent of the road users killed since the start of the year. Overall, passengers account for 22 per cent of the fatalities.

The RSU said males and females account for 84 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively of road fatalities so far this year.
