President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association (JTA) Mark Malabver, says the dates for the continuation of salary negotiations with the government are to be set in the first week of January .

He made the disclosure during an interview with IRIE FM News.

According to Mr. Malabver, the meetings should look at increments and salary negotiations.

He said, as at April this year, the JTA is without a contract with the government, and as such, is looking to conclude negotiations.

Mr. Malabver said despite the impacts of hurricane Melissa it is vital for negotiations to proceed, noting that many of the island’s teachers were severely affected.

He said while the JTA is mindful of the passing of hurricane Melissa and the possible implications, it continues to maintain that teachers should be paid a salary that is parallel to their worth and value.
