The Southern Regional Health Authority, (SRHA) has implemented contingency measures, at facilities that are being overwhelmed with patients, since the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Regional Director Michael Bent acknowledged the frustration of persons seeking medical care at hospitals and health centres, especially with the long wait time.

He pointed out that among the reasons for the overcrowding at some facilities, is the scaling down of operations at the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth after it was damaged during the storm.

He said , the facilities are seeing between 80 and a 100 percent increased capacity.

Mr. Bent noted that the SRHA has arranged for additional staff to be brought in from other areas.
