Retired Senior Superintendent of Police, Steve McGregor, will on Wednesday be presented as the candidate to represent the People’s National Party (PNP) in Central Kingston in the next General Election that is due by September this year.
McGregor, regarded as one of Jamaica’s top crimefighters when he served in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, replaces Lawrence Rowe who was controversially withdrawn as the PNP’s caretaker/candidate on the weekend.
Opposition leader and PNP President Mark Golding will officially present McGregor at the PNP’s constituency office at North Avenue, Kingston at 6:00 PM.
According to the PNP, McGregor’s candidacy reinforces the party’s commitment to leadership and development in the area.
In confirming Rowe’s withdrawal on Saturday, PNP General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell thanked Rowe for his service and his efforts in representing the people of Central Kingston.
"We wish him all the best in his future endeavours," Campbell said in a statement.
The party shared that its leadership had been meeting with Rowe and the constituency executive during what it described as a period of transition, to "emphasise that the constituency's interests are paramount".
In that regard, the PNP said it remains committed to ensuring that the people of Central Kingston receive strong and effective representation that serves them and uplifts their lives.
Sections of the media have since reported what appears to be a souring of relations between Rowe and the PNP, including demands he reportedly made on the party.
