A male student of Campion College died as a result of injuries he sustained in a freak accident at the school on Tuesday.

The identity of the deceased has not been ascertained, but it is understood that the boy was a second-form student.

Preliminary reports are that the boy, who is a member of the school's rugby team, was at training when he was doing pull ups on a metal bar that fell on him.

The child was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

In reacting to the tragedy, Education and Youth Minitster, Fayval Williams, said counselling support will be provided to the students and the staff of the school by the ministry on Wednesday.

"I'm deeply saddened by the death of a student today at Campion College. While I await details on what happened, in the interim, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and the entire school community," Williams stated.

"We are so, so sad to have gotten this news this afternoon," she said.
