A subsea fibre optic cable for Jamaica is expected to be operational by the third quarter of next year.
Yesterday, the government signed a letter of intent with Trans Americas Fiber system for the subsea cable project, which aims to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.
Telecommunications Minister Daryl Vaz noted that the final agreement is expected to be signed later this year, with construction of the cable anticipated for the fourth quarter of 2026.
The subsea cable initiative is aimed at expanding, securing, and upgrading Jamaica’s international fibre optic connectivity.
The primary goal of the initiative is to improve the reliability, speed and affordability of broadband internet access, while fostering economic growth.
Mr. Vaz said the signing of the letter of intent is another step by the government to strengthen the digital backbone of the country.
He said this initiative, once finalised, is expected to reduce cost by up to 99%, which translates into more affordable internet and more opportunities for businesses and families.
