Substance abuse continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Jamaica
Substance abuse continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Jamaica, with alcohol, cannabis and tobacco remaining the most commonly used.
Experts at day three of the National Health Research Conference cited a recent survey which highlighted the issue and recommended targeted interventions.
Psychiatrist Dr. Kristen Robinson-Barrett said the 2023 National Drug Prevalence Survey revealed widespread use of substances, especially among males.
Dr. Robinson-Barrett also highlighted variations in substance abuse, pointing to specific parishes where focused interventions are needed urgently.
She noted that Trelawny consistently emerged as a hot-spot, reporting the highest rates of alcohol, cannabis and nicotine use.
She explained that between January and November last year, 849 people sought treatment, with cannabis use accounting for 60 percent of the cases.
