Shanice Beckford’s last-second goal secured a dramatic 49-49 draw for Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls against England in the opening match of the inaugural Netball Vitality Horizon Series on Saturday at the AO Arena.

England led for three quarters but faltered late as Jamaica surged ahead in the final moments. A crucial interception by England captain Fran Williams briefly put the Vitality Roses back in front, but Beckford pounced on a rebound to level the scores after six-foot-four shooter Romelda Aiken-George missed two late attempts.

Defensive intensity defined the closing stages, with England's Funmi Fadoju making two critical interceptions and Jamaica's Shamera Sterling-Humphrey thwarting Lois Pearson seconds before the final whistle.

The four-match Horizon Series, which will run annually over the next four years, continues with a second match in Manchester on Sunday at 9:00 am Jamaica time before moving to Kingston, Jamaica, for back-to-back games on November 25 and 26.

England, ranked second in the world after their October series win over New Zealand, are without key players Eleanor Cardwell, who is sidelined with injury, and Natalie Metcalf, who is expecting her first child.

Jamaica, competing in their first test match since finishing third at the 2023 World Cup, showcased resilience in a thrilling stalemate, setting the tone for the series.

The Horizon Netball Series can be seen live on SportsMax and the SportsMax app.
