One of the suspects in relation to the shooting death of Police Corporal Christopher Smith at a gas station on Beechwood Avenue in St Andrew last Friday night, is now in police custody.

The suspect was held at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) earlier on Wednesday, the police reported in a media release.

The 47-year-old corporal was attached to the Kingston Western Police Division.

Reports from the Half-Way Tree Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) were that about 10:54 pm, Smith drove his private motorcar to a petrol station to purchase fuel, unknowingly entering an active armed robbery scene.

While he waited to be served, one of the robbers approached and shot him several times.

Members of the public assisted Corporal Smith to the hospital, where he died while being treated.

Elements of the incident were captured on video.

In it release on Wednesday, the JCF encouraged members of the public to support the investigation by sharing what they know with the Half-Way Tree CIB at 876-926-8185, Crime Stop at 311, or any police station.

The police also promised further updates when available.
