Three children have died as a result of a house fire in Walkerswood, St Ann early on Sunday morning.

Preliminary reports are that an elderly woman and a child survived the blaze.

While the details are unclear, it is understood that the woman woke up to fire coming from a room that was occupied by the three victims, who are said to have been her grandchildren.

Firefighters and the police are currently at the scene conducting investigations.

In reacting to the development, Member of Parliament (MP) for North East St Ann, Matthew Samuda, described the situation as a tragedy. He confirmed the death of the three children.

"No words to describe the emotional state of the family and the wider community. All state agencies are on site providing support," said Samuda on Facebook.

Last week, a five-year-old girl died in a house fire in St Andrew.
