Director of Elections, Glasspole Brown
Despite the lingering effects of Tropical Storm Rafael, the Office of the Director of Elections has confirmed that nominations for the upcoming by-elections will proceed as planned today. Director Glasspole Brown stated that his team is fully prepared to oversee the nomination of candidates vying for two parliamentary seats and two municipal positions.
The parliamentary seats in question, Trelawny Southern and St Andrew North Western, were vacated and will be filled along with municipal positions in Morant Bay, St Thomas, and Aenon Town, Clarendon. Nominations are scheduled to open at 10:00am.
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has announced its candidates for the parliamentary seats. Duane Smith will run in St Andrew North Western to succeed Dr Nigel Clarke, while former Member of Parliament Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert will seek to reclaim her seat in Trelawny Southern.
Dalrymple-Philibert's resignation in September 2023 triggered the by-election in Trelawny Southern. She stepped down after the Integrity Commission announced that she would face eight criminal charges for making false statements in her statutory declarations. The Commission alleged that she had failed to declare a Mercedes-Benz motor vehicle in her filings from 2015 to 2021. Dalrymple-Philibert attributed the omission to an oversight.
The former MP is scheduled to appear in court on December 6. Parish Court Judge Leighton Morris will rule on whether the Integrity Commission's case against her should be dismissed or proceed to trial.
