Kingston College (KC) secured their 11th ISSA Olivier Shield title with a 4-3 sudden-death penalty win over daCosta Cup champions Garvey Maceo High School, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at St Elizabeth Technical High School in Santa Cruz on Saturday.
Both teams were tied 3-3 after the first five penalties, but in the sudden-death shootout, KC’s Kamaul Patterson kept his composure to score, while Garvey Maceo’s Livingstone Donaldson missed the target.
Garvey Maceo from Clarendon seemed on course to claim their first Olivier Shield after Omarian O’Brien gave them the lead in the 62nd minute. However, an own goal by Tyreek McKenley in the 84th minute dashed the Clarendon school's hopes.
This marks KC's second Olivier Shield victory over Garvey Maceo, having also defeated them 2-0 in the 2021 season, which extended into January, 2022 due to COVID-19 disruptions.
“This is a pleasant achievement—something that we set our sights on as a team, and we did it,” said KC head coach Vassell Reynolds. “This team has shown character all season, and I must say kudos to the entire coaching staff. It was a journey, but we were always confident that we prepared this team well enough from the start, so we weren’t worried. Even when we went behind, we never lost belief, and winning this title is the perfect way to cap off an incredible year for the school.”
Garvey Maceo’s head coach, Lester Hibbert, was gracious in defeat. “We had the game planned to the cue, but unfortunately, we conceded an own goal,” he said. “I think we created all the chances in the game and enjoyed good possession of the ball, but that’s just football. Sometimes you win some, and sometimes you lose some. So, we have to give thanks and move on. Congrats to KC.”
