St Lucia’s opposition leader Allan Chastanet has thrown his support behind the United National Congress (UNC’s) political leader’s suggestion that a single body of regional opposition leaders should be formed to address several issues, including crime, across the Caribbean.
Chastanet was speaking at the party’s anti-crime town hall meeting in Sangre Grande on Monday night.
He said at present, a plan is being developed along with this country’s opposition leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who posed the idea.
Chastanet noted further that the issue of crime is no longer a national issue, and countries should not treat it as such, as he said the gangs, which are creating the majority of problems, are beyond regional networks with a higher calibre of weapons.
The St Lucian opposition leader also took the opportunity to urge leaders across the region to fund a Regional Security System (RSS) throughout CARICOM.
