Opposition calls for independent and transparent probe into incident in which 4-year-old child was killed in St. James
The opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is calling for an independent and transparent investigation into an incident in which a 4-year-old child was killed, during an alleged confrontation between gunmen and police in Granville St. James, yesterday.
Police reported that the security forces acted on intelligence and claims of illegal gun salutes despite repeated public warnings against the practice in the community.
Reports are that individuals gathered in the community and were in possession of prohibited firearms, allegedly with the intention of conducting illegal gun salutes.
Further reports are that upon their arrival, the security forces came under gun fire from armed individuals in the area.
Lawmen reportedly took evasive action and returned fire, in keeping with their training and the prevailing threat.
Its reported that when the situation was brought under control, two males were found with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
They were later pronounced dead at hospital.
Lawmen also reported that a 4-year-old child sustained gunshot wounds and later succumbed, while receiving medical treatment.
Opposition spokesperson on National Security, Fitz Jackson said the loss of lives, particularly that of a child, is deeply troubling.
