Opposition says expected fuel price increase due to Middle East war highlights need for renewable energy
Opposition Spokesperson on Energy, Phillip Paulwell says the inevitable increase in fuel prices due to the war in the Middle East is another indication that the government must invest in renewable energy.
The statement comes, amidst fresh military strikes in the Middle East following initial attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel on Saturday.
Iran’s Supreme Leader was reportedly killed in the strikes.
The ongoing conflict has spread to other areas, with bombings reported in neighbouring countries such as Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
The BBC reports that oil and gas prices have surged as the attacks continue.
Yesterday, Energy Minister Daryl Vaz said while it is still early days, impacts for Jamaica are very possible due to uncertainty about the outcome of the war.
Speaking with IRIE FM News, Mr. Paulwell agreed that impacts are very likely but criticized the government for not heeding the Opposition’s advice to prioritize renewable energy.
Meanwhile, he called on Jamaicans to conserve as best as possible noting that there might also be issues in logistics.
