Two mayors from parishes hit hard during Hurricane Melissa last year express confidence in preparations for new hurricane season

Two mayors from parishes which suffered the brunt of damage during Hurricane Melissa last year are expressing confidence in preparations for the new hurricane season.

The 2026 atlantic hurricane season started today and will end November 30.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, Mayor of Black River in St. Elizabeth Richard Solomon said heavy equipment has been placed in key areas in the event of a hurricane.

He also pointed to improved communication adding that 50 shelters are available.

In the meantime, he noted that there are 29 residents still in shelters, but work is taking place to construct accommodation for them.

He was supported by Falmouth Mayor Collen Gager who told IRIE FM News that he is more than confident that the parish is prepared for the hurricane season with all shelters checked.

Mayor Gager also pointed out that the parish is equipped with star link devices for connectivity and that drain cleaning has been taking place.

He said 8 persons are still in shelters, and arrangements are being made to have them relocated.
