Culture intellect Dr Olive Lewin is a beloved author, social anthropologist, musicologist, and teacher, who may be best known for her recorded anthologies of old Jamaica folk songs, researched, and collected over her lifetime.
In enduring the legacy of Dr Lewin, Hyacinth McDonald, the executive director of Kingston Night Market, produced a tribute and a special celebration of the life and legacy of Lewin.
From cultural programs coordinator to the director of cultural affairs, Dr Olive Lewin has significantly contributed to several nation-building efforts through training, and syllabus development and served as an adjudicator in music, and promoting the arts and culture.
She’s established the Jamaica Memory Bank Project, geared at setting up systems and collect information on life, customs and traditions from senior citizens contributing to a national databank of cultural knowledge and recording.
In honour of what would’ve been her 97th birthday (September 28), McDonald and her team coordinated the tribute event for all to enjoy.
Naturally, members of the Jamaican Folk Singers – the cultural musical group founded by Lewin in 1967, were present and delivered the tribute to the late, great cultural tour de force.
