An investigation has been launched into the death of a construction worker at the north side of the eastern concourse of the Sangster International Airport construction site, in Montego bay, St. James, this morning.
Dead is Everton Campbell.
The Transport Ministry said based on preliminary reports, the incident may have involved the failure of mechanical equipment.
Portfolio Minister Daryl Vaz expressed sadness at Campbell’s death, describing it as a deeply painful and unfortunate loss.
He said the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) has been informed and is engaging with the Ministry on the matter.
Mr. Vaz underscored the critical importance of work place safety and accountability across all transport related projects.
He emphasised that while the Government remains committed to advancing critical infrastructure and development, there can be no compromise when it comes to the safety and well-being of the people who make that progress possible.
The Minister noted that every employer, contractor and stakeholder has a responsibility to ensure that established safety standards and protocols are rigorously followed, and that every reasonable measure is taken to identify and mitigate hazards.
He further noted that Jamaica’s development must be pursued in a manner that places the protection of workers at the centre of the country’s infrastructure programme.
Mr. Vaz said the Ministry will continue to engage with the relevant authorities as the investigations proceed.
He said the Ministry also remains committed to strengthening safety standards and promoting safe working environments, across the transport sector.
Meanwhile, MBJ Airports Limited, operator of Sangster International Airport has expressed sadness at the incident.
MBJ extended condolences to Mr. Campbell’s family, adding that it will arrange counselling and support.
The operator said works on the construction site have been temporarily suspended, and that it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.
