Firefighter helps put out fire at restaurant
A suspended member of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Shaquille Ashley, 27, found himself thrust into the role of firefighter once again when a blaze erupted recently at the Different Flavour Restaurant in the Portmore Mall, St Catherine.
The incident unfolded around 11am. when a fire broke out at the restaurant and quickly spread to the roof. Ashley, who was in the mall with his mother to conduct business, sprang into action upon hearing the alarm.
Recognising the urgency of the situation and the potential delay in the arrival of a fire brigade unit, Ashley seized the initiative and grabbed an emergency fire hose located within the plaza. He then proceeded to battle the flames.
“I’m still a fireman, although I am suspended. I could not have seen a fire like this and not do anything about it. It is in my blood,” Ashley explained.
The fire brigade unit eventually arrived at the scene, but by then, Ashley had already successfully extinguished the blaze. His timely intervention prevented the fire from causing significant damage to the mall and potentially endangering lives.
Ashley's firefighting efforts occurred while he was suspended from his duties due to a 2019 conviction for possession of a knife. The conviction, which is currently under appeal, stemmed from an incident where Ashley was arrested while carrying a knife to work.
