Jamaicans are being urged to brace for increased rainfall that is expected Tuesday through to Wednesday of this week.

The warning comes as some parishes are still recovering from last week's severe weather that was associated with Tropical Storm Rafael, which left several communities flooded, the Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine blocked by boulders days up to Sunday, and the deaths of two persons who were inside a vehicle that was washed away by floodwaters in Lluidas Vale, also in St Catherine.

A statement from the Meteorological Service on Monday said a "slow-moving tropical wave" that is currently impacting weather across Hispaniola is expected to move across Jamaica (on) Tuesday into Wednesday.

The tropical wave is forecast to influence weather conditions over the island over the two-day period.

"Consequently, projections are for cloudy conditions with periods of showers and thunderstorms which may be heavy at times, to affect sections of most parishes, especially southern and north-eastern parishes, beginning Tuesday morning through to Wednesday evening," the Met Service stated.

Fishers and other marine interests, especially those inshore and offshore the south coast, should exercise extreme caution as sea conditions will deteriorate in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms.

The Met Service said the tropical wave is forecast to merge with a broad area of low pressure across the south-western Caribbean Sea by Wednesday evening.

The low pressure system currently has a 50 per cent chance of tropical cyclone development over the next seven days, and could begin influencing weather across Jamaica by Friday.

The Met Service said it will be closely monitoring that system for further development.
