Beginning next week, the Government is to provide greenhouse farmers with critical supplies and materials to help them rebuild following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3.

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Floyd Green, made the announcement while providing an update on the ongoing Hurricane Beryl Recovery Programme during the sitting of the House of Representatives on September 24.

“Recognising the importance of protected agriculture, we have already procured $27 million worth of material, including plastic, antiviral netting and shade cloth,” he said.

Green added that distribution is to involve farmers in the hardest hit parishes.

The minister said an additional $55 million is in procurement for additional material.

“Already, 35 greenhouse farmers have benefited from 1,250 bags of fertiliser, potting mix and vegetable seeds,” he said.

He further disclosed that the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has committed $3.1 million of greenhouse material, bolstering the Government’s efforts in the crucial area of agriculture.
