A two-year-old Belgian Malinois named Max has been recognised for his exceptional contribution to crime-fighting at the Jamaica Constabulary Force's (JCF) Annual Honours and Awards Ceremony.
The event, which marked the conclusion of Police Week 2024, celebrated individuals for long service and good conduct.
Among the honourees was Max, an in-house-bred service dog whose work has been credited with multiple significant seizures during high-profile operations.
Max’s sharp instincts and steely focus have led to the recovery of several illegal firearms and other contraband.
In a glowing citation that was read by Sergeant Shermaine Hassock, it was revealed that during one operation, he helped uncover a Mac 11 submachine gun, a ballistic vest, illegal cigarettes, and a large quantity of marijuana.
On another occasion, Max detected a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol concealed in a small bucket, along with two empty magazines.
His successes continued when he located a Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol and seven rounds of ammunition.
The citation further praised Max’s outstanding contributions, highlighting the meticulous training provided by its handlers and the strength of the bond between humans and canines in law enforcement.
Max’s achievements underscore the evolving strategies employed in Jamaica’s fight against crime, demonstrating how collaboration between officers and canine units enhances operational effectiveness.
