US Congressman says Jamaica will face consequences after PM Holness’ remarks about Cuba/US tension

United States Congressman Carlos Gimenez has warned that Jamaica will face consequences after Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness made remarks about the Cuba / USA tension.

The USA had implemented measures to cut off Cuba’s oil supply, which has affected other key sectors in the island, such as health care.

Yesterday, the U.S. Treasury Department said it would authorize companies seeking licenses to resell Venezuelan oil to Cuba’s private sector.

Speaking at the 50th Regular Meeting of Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, in St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday, before the USA’s latest announcement, Dr. Holness said Jamaica supports constructive dialogue between the United States and Cuba, aimed at de-escalation, reform and stability.

Dr. Holness, who is also leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, said the situation in Cuba must be addressed.

In response, Mr. Gimenez who represents Florida’s 28th Congressional District, condemned Dr. Holness’ statements.

The Congressman said he finds it lamentable that the Jamaica Labour Party would cover up what he called moribund dictatorship in Cuba, when the Castro regime repeatedly intervened in Jamaica’s politics to worsen partisan tensions and undermine the JLP.

The Congressman said Jamaica will face the consequences.

Gimenez further stated that Caribbean countries should follow the lead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who he claims has governed with moral clarity, strengthened her nation’s alliance with the USA, and championed democracy in the region.
