MP for South East St. Ann calls for probe into fatal shooting of two brothers to be handled with transparency and integrity

Member of Parliament for South East St. Ann Dr. Kenneth Russell has expressed deep concern following the fatal shooting of two men by the police in Steerfield, near Golden Grove, St. Ann this morning.

The deceased have been identified as brothers Romane and Davian Henry.

According to the police, around 5:50 A.M., a team from the Area 5 Fugitive Apprehension Team conducted a targeted operation at a premises in search of a suspect believed to be in possession of prohibited weapons and unauthorised ammunition.

Lawmen say on arrival at the location, officers reportedly entered the house where they encountered two armed men.

Police say both men pointed firearms at the officers and opened gunfire.

The police said they returned fire, hitting both men.

They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Its reported that one shotgun and one pistol, along with several rounds of ammunition were seized at the scene.

Commenting on the incident, Dr. Russell expressed sadness and noted that the community is in profound grief and distress.

He said the account being given by residents is different from that put forward by the police.

He called on the Independent Commission of Investigations to probe the matter and expressed hope that it will be handled with transparency and integrity.

He also urged residents to remain calm, while noting that the country cannot afford any erosion of trust between the citizens and the police.
