Golding welcomes position taken by former AG Marlene Malahoo Forte that the NaRRa bill should be reworked
Opposition Leader and People’s National Party (PNP) President Mark Golding is welcoming the position taken by former Attorney General Marlene Malahoo Forte that the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA) Bill should be reworked.
In a rare political move last week, Malahoo Forte took a different position from her Government colleagues and called for changes to be made to the Bill.
However, a majority of Government members remain firm in backing the Bill in its current form.
The proposed law is aimed at establishing a single central authority to coordinate and speed up reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
The continued debate over the Bill has now seen civil society groups raising concern over what they say is the limited scope of engagement surrounding the legislation.
Addressing a PNP National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in St. Mary yesterday, Mr. Golding reiterated that accountability needs to be at the forefront of NaRRA.
He expressed disappointment in the positions being taken by some Government Ministers on the matter unlike the arguments presented by Malahoo Forte.
Mr. Golding told party members that the NaRRa has no statutory board to provide oversight of its operations.
