Gov’t allocates millions for hurricane shelters supplies and drain cleaning as Atlantic hurricane season gets underway

Sixty million dollars has been set aside to purchase cots, blankets and other supplies for use at hurricane shelters.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie made the announcement in Parliament today during his Sectoral Debate presentation.

Mr. McKenzie also gave an update on the status of alternative accommodation for shelterees in Westmoreland.

The residents were at the school following the passage of Hurricane Melissa last October and their relocation has been fraught with challenges.

The minister said the bases for 10 of 16 modular container homes that will serve as the new shelter are complete.

McKenzie said the Government is moving apace to establish purpose-built shelters in four targeted parishes. 

Meantime, the Government has allocated $70 million towards drain cleaning activities as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of adverse weather during this hurricane season.
