The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) has called on the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to announce without further delay the commencement of the consultative process to review the Labour Relations Code.
The JCC made the call in a press release noting that this code affects all Jamaicans at all levels.
President of the JCC Emile Leiba noted that it cannot be the case that any law or structure that has been in place for fifty years should not be examined with a view to determine whether or not it is still fit for purpose.
According to Mr. Leiba, Jamaica’s long-term economic competitiveness depends on a labour market that works for everyone.
He said the JCC stands ready to participate constructively and in good faith in any such process.
He noted recent statements by the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry whose president Jason Russell publicly championed labour law reform as a central priority for his administration’s upcoming term.
