Commuters in St. James who were spared the first phase of the taxi fare increase are paying the full 16% hike, starting today.

Last month, when the Government announced that the 16% would be implemented in two phases – 8% in June and 8% in July – many Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators refrained from applying any increase until this morning.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, President of the St. James Taxi Association, Dion Chance said the implementation has been going well so far, with no issue reported.

Acknowledging reports that some commuters have been overcharged by some PPV operators, Mr. Chance said the responsibility now falls to the Transport Authority and police officers to ensure that persons are treated fairly.
