The Senate has approved the Civil Aviation (Amendment) Act, which aims to ensure that Jamaica’s aviation laws effectively support the fulfilment of international obligations and align with current global civil aviation standards and best practices.
Government Senator, Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, who took charge of the Bill during yesterday’s sitting of the Upper House, noted that it is intended to enhance Jamaica’s oversight of the aviation industry, support economic growth, and reduce the possibility of any adverse findings by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
She argued that without the new amendments, Jamaica’s reputation is at risk.
While Opposition Senators broadly accepted the Bill, Alan Bernard raised questions about accountability, including whether safeguards were in place to ensure that ministerial involvement during investigations was “above board”.
In response, Senator Dr. Morris Dixon assured that safeguards are in place.
