With many people still struggling to cope with the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, the Government will be hosting 2 additional locations for this year’s fireworks festival, as part of efforts to uplift spirits.
The popular event will be held tonight in its usual areas, Kingston, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, with the new festivals slated for Black River and Negril.
The 2 new areas were specially selected to cater to residents of parishes hard hit by the storm.
The event is staged annually by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) on new years eve, with citizens invited to partake of numerous activities and entertainment to ring in the new year.
This year’s theme is ‘Life. Love. Recovery’ reflecting the country’s collective resilience and the importance of coming together in moments of national significance
Culture Minister Olivia Grange noted that the aim is to encourage Jamaicans to welcome the new year with hope and optimism.
She said its important to mark the end of a very challenging year.
She said Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness will attend the festival in Black River.
