Principal Director at the Bureau of Gender Affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Sharon Coburn Robinson has listed inter-generational trauma and men who are facing financial pressure among the three main causes of domestic violence.

Domestic violence also referred to as inter-partner violence (IPV) was one of the topic’s discussed at yesterday’s webinar series hosted by Choose Life International.

It was held under the theme: “Fixing the Family: Absentee Fathers, Domestic Violence, Bullying Among Children”.

Mrs. Coburn Robinson who was one of the presenters described domestic violence as a pattern of behaviour in any relationship that is used to maintain power and control over an intimate partner.

She explained that the abuse in such relationships can take various forms.

In assessing inter-generational trauma as a cause of domestic violence, Mrs. Coburn Robinson noted that it relates to the children witnessing such violence and manifesting it in their adult lives.

She cited the other two causes as harmful socio-cultural norms and gender stereotypes as well as financial pressure which is mainly seen among men facing what she termed provider stress.
